Amy Cole Rizzico

As an interdisciplinary artist, I construct relationships between contrasting, opposing, and silencing forces to give voice to the unexpected harmonies of our fragmented human nature. In a culture of mass production and generation, I view making by hand as a transformative act. It is intrinsic to community building, and a site for cross-disciplinary innovation, and shared discovery. Rather than working in silos, my practice fluidly blends 2D and 3D approaches, bringing a feminine perspective to an ongoing investigation of how we suppress, control, and navigate our lived experiences.

In the studio, my choice of materials changes based on the concept I'm expressing. I fluctuate between oil, watercolor, and collage to build a distinct abstract visual language, while simultaneously creating mixed-media and fiber sculptures through sewing, basketry, weaving, and wrapping, and through interactions with both found and constructed objects. By leveraging interactions between recognizable organic elements and rigid, graphical or manmade structures, I build cooperative tension within my work. Ultimately, my art offers an unbiased space to observe beyond preconceived narratives, inviting viewers to break through old storylines, reclaim the imaginative possibility of the handmade, and find a brief moment of shared connection.
